From Kathy Reichs and Brendan Reichs’ Virals: Seizure.
Tory, her three closest friends (Ben, Hiram, and Shelton), and Cooper (the dog) were recently infected with a mutated strain of a canine virus, so that the teens are able to access much enhanced vision, hearing, smell, and strength. A scientist at the research institute was running illegal and dangerous tests on a wolf dog and saving the dog meant catching the super virus that he carried. The Pack (that’s what they call themselves) are slowly learning how to control their newly discovered powers, but it is still a force that seems wild at its core. The teens discover that money is going to be taken from the institute that funds the island (that employs their parents), so Tory leads the ragtag pack to save Loggerhead Island from shutting down by somehow saving the place from financial ruin. A seemingly random clue leads the Pack to begin a hunt for a long-lost buried treasure. The varied skills of each of Tory, Ben, Hi, Shelton, and Cooper all work together beautifully to find clues to solve the mystery of the pirate’s treasure; it would solve all their problems… if they can just find it without getting killed.
The second book in the Virals series is full of action and mystery. The characters are developed, both from the last book and through the story of this book. The mystery is a bit less life-or-death than the first book, even though the Pack often finds themselves in life-or-death situations; this is not to say that the mystery isn’t enjoyable, because it is a fun and intense experience. The dialog keeps the story moving and building at a quick pace; when the intensity of the mystery lulls, there are issues at home or school that builds to steady the pace. Seizure is a very entertaining story that does well to keep the reader addicted to the series.
