“Sadie Kane here.”

From Rick Riordan’s Kane Chronicles: The Serpent’s Shadow.

As if life hadn’t been crazy enough over the past few years for the Kane family, especially Carter and Sadie, the world continues to throw danger at the kids… mainly in the form of a horrible creature from Ancient Egypt that has escaped into our world.  The Kanes have to find a way to keep Apophis, the Serpent of Chaos, from destroying the world, but all their best attempts fail.  While Sadie and Carter as magicians are powerful with their magic, they are also new and rather unprepared for the level of evil they are up against.  Carter is desperately searching for a way to defeat Apophis that will allow he and Sadie to survive the encounter; he tries to consult with as many friendly Egyptian gods and magicians as he can, but Apophis’ evil plan is quickly becoming reality.  Sadie and Carter must interact with many gods (major and minor) as they develop their plan… even going so far as to use Setne’s help to capture Apophis.  As the darkness closes in around the Kane siblings and their magician and mythical friends, each step of the plan becomes more and more dangerous, each interaction more and more feeble, and each choice more and more life-changing.

The final book in the Kane Chronicles Trilogy starts off centered in action and danger and uses that momentum to develop a fast-paced read that doesn’t let readers go until the very end.  Riordan’s adventure into Egyptian mythology was not as popular as his Greek and Roman series, but it is still full of wonderful information, endearing characters, and the author’s classic witty humor.  The Serpent’s Shadow is not a book to be missed, especially for Riordan’s fans that are stuck waiting for the completion of other series.
