“Splashdown.”

From Anthony Horowitz’s Alex Rider: Snakehead.

Even though he expected that his life would change after he agreed to work as a spy for Britain’s MI6, teenager Alex Rider never expected it to change as much as it did; deadly missions, evil billionaires, fights with highly-trained assassins, and saving the world… even from outer space.  Alex again finds himself recovering in a hospital from a dangerous mission, but (of course) the evil of the world waits for no spy, so Alex is sucked back into the world of espionage.  Somewhere in the world, the crime organization SCORPIA steals a super bomb in order to assassinate the attendees at a celebrity-heavy conference.  Meanwhile, the Australian Secret Intelligence Service need Alex’s help in bringing down a Snakehead ring; Alex is reluctant to help until they partner him with an agent (Ash) that had been best friends with Alex’s father.  Alex and Ash head off to Thailand where they are met by a complex smuggling ring and an even more complicated secret-from-Ash mission by Mrs. Jones of MI6.  Every step of their journey gives Alex the opportunity to shed some light on the lives of his deceased parents, but it also pushes Alex and Ash deeper into menacing and uncharted territory where trust becomes more dangerous.

From start to finish, this book is full of action, suspense, and mystery.  The characters are honest and believable, especially Alex who is a clever teen using his wit and skills to solve the many problems around him.  The mystery of the book is very fascinating with twists and turns throughout, but also a steady development that keeps building.  This seventh book in the Alex Rider series does very well to create a foundation from strong characters and story lines that urge the reader to continue in the series.
