From Chris McGeorge’s Guess Who.
When the alcoholic and drug addicted celebrity detective Morgan Shepherd wakes up handcuffed to a strange hotel bed, he is instantly aware of the danger of his current situation, but when the other five people trapped in the room with him regain consciousness, things quickly go from bad to worse. Locked in the room with him is the trusting and focused Mandy, the quiet teen Rhona, the loud-mouthed lawyer Alan, the mentally-unstable actor Constance, and the trusting Ryan… and the dead man in the bathtub. When a mysterious man in a mask uses the television to inform the group that the killer is someone in the room and that they will all be killed unless Shepherd can solve the murder in the next three hours, chaos and distrust quickly break out. Each person in the room has some secrets to hide, possibly Shepherd most of all, but as time quickly counts down Shepherd must try to separate the truth from the lies while battling through withdrawal. As Shepherd’s world crumbles around him, it quickly becomes obvious that the plan which the six have found themselves trapped in is far more sinister than they ever could have imagined and straight from his forgotten past.
McGeorge’s thriller is a fast-paced ride of twists, shocking revelations, and page turning action. The writing style mimics Patterson in the short, surprising chapters, but the true enjoyment comes from the main character’s development through the book, with both his struggles with withdrawal and how he solves the mystery. The small setting and character list could easily lend itself to boredom, but McGeorge manages to keep readers on the edge of their seat for the entire book. A solidly entertaining read, Guess Who will keep readers guessing until the final page.
