“It was a perfectly normal school morning in the Campbell household–disorganized, chaotic and at least one of my children was running around half-naked–right up until the moment the police arrived at our front door to question me in connection with the death of Howard Grant.”

From Margot Hunt’s Best Friends Forever.

Alice has found herself in a difficult situation.  The former logic professor used to just focus on her children (thirteen-year-old Liam and eleven-year-old Bridget) while keeping her stressed marriage to husband Todd alive.  However, all that changed three years ago when Alice happened to meet and befriend Kat, an ultra-wealthy art gallery owner from the neighboring (and exclusive) Jupiter Island.  The two women quickly became best friends and confidants despite the vastly different lifestyles and financial situations.  When Alice is asked by the Jupiter Island police to come answer some questions about the recent death of Kat’s alcoholic husband, Howard, Alice is unsure how she can help since she hardly even knew the man.  However, the longer she speaks with the angry Sergeant Oliver and the reserved Detective Demer, the more Alice learns that Howard’s death was not an accident and that the police are looking for information connected with his murder.  As Alice struggles to understand all the accusations that are being thrown at her, one thing begins to repeatedly nag at her: there might be something deeper and darker in her friendship with the newly-widowed Kat.

This thriller uses a constant back-and-forth of present day interview questions and the previous memories that they hold for the main character.  This constant use of flashbacks can be a bit confusing at the beginning of the book, but Hunt uses the writing style to perfectly, simultaneously show the source of Alice’s past and current struggle with the accusations.  At times, the reader will feel that they are ahead of the main character, but there are enough twisty developments to keep the story interesting.  The book is a quick read that manages to pack a punch for the readers.   Best Friends Forever is a good story that will leave readers questioning everything they’ve read.
