“Artemis sat on an oxblood leather armchair, facing Beckett and Myles.”

From Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl: The Time Paradox.

After his last adventure with his friend elf, Holly Short, and their new friend, No. 1, Artemis has come home to a completely different life.  Now the older brother to twin brothers, Artemis is desperate to make up the time he lost, but his main focus is on his mother’s rapidly decreasing health.  In an attempt to help his mother, Artemis tries to use magic to heal her, but he only succeeds in making her much worse.  No. 1 and Holly determine that Artemis’ mother is suffering from the magically-induced Spelltrophy which can only be cured through the use of a specific breed of lemur… which is now extinct due to Artemis’ past fortune-seeking mistakes.  Desperate to save his mother, Artemis convinces Holly to help him and No. 1 to send them back eight years into the past to save the lemur from extinction.  The trip is not without physical issues for both Artemis and Holly, but that is only the beginning of their challenges as everything that could go wrong, does go wrong.  The time traveling pair try to avoid Artemis’ past self, but are only able to do so with the help of some unexpected faces from their past.  As desperation pushes Artemis and Holly into more and more danger, it also forces them to face off against the younger Artemis, his old associates, and an unexpected enemy in an unforgettable time-sensitive fight for their lives.

The sixth book in Colfer’s popular fantasy series features the same attitude, humor, and thrills as the previous books, while also managing to create an exciting new adventure.  Readers will enjoy watching Artemis’ development throughout the story, but in a way that the young (mostly) former criminal mastermind could do.  The Time Paradox will be a hit for fans of the series and will leave readers desperate to jump into the next book.
