“‘We would not be in this deplorable situation,’ declares the younger and taller of the two men in the small club-room, ‘if you had not tried to bully her into boarding school!'”

From Nancy Springer’s Enola Holmes: The Case of the Left-Handed Lady.

As the younger sister of the famed Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes, fourteen-year-old Enola has been fighting relentlessly to hold on to her independence from Mycroft’s ridiculous expectations.  After her mother disappeared a few months ago, Enola has tried to keep in touch with the mysterious woman while also staying free of the boarding school to which her brothers are intent on sending her.  Hiding in disguise with the name of Miss Meshle during the day, Enola is able to manage a small London business as a finder of lost things that allows her to take small cases under the pretense of being the fictitious Dr. Ragostin’s secretary.  When Dr. Watson tries to hire Ragostin to find Enola, he inadvertently informs the disguised Enola that Sherlock is searching for her, but Watson also brings her a case of another missing girl: young Lady Cecily.  Masquerading as Dr. Ragostin’s young bride, Enola is able insert herself into the world of the girl’s family to investigate the strange disappearance, and Enola quickly discovers many inconsistencies in Cecily’s life public and private life, mainly written-backwards journals, surprisingly dark drawings of London’s destitute, and a friendship with a free thinking young man.  However, when Enola is attacked by an unknown almost-assassin, it shakes the girl to her core as she tries to figure out who attacked her and why she was attacked while also staying hidden from Sherlock.

The second book in the Enola Holmes Mystery series allows the young heroine to develop in wit and charm for the reader’s benefit.  Springer creates another story that feels connected to the famous detective stories, while also maintaining a captivating uniqueness.  The Case of the Left-Handed Lady is sure to entertain mystery fans of all ages, and leave them desperate for the next adventure.
