From James Patterson’s Maximum Ride: Nevermore.
Still on rocky ground, human-bird hybrid kids, Max and Fang, are at odds in their distrust some certain people and mutant in their lives. Angel goes to the flock’s scientist allies, Jeb and Dr. Martinez, for a procedure, but when she wakes up she realizes that she has been tricked and intentionally grounded by the malicious adults. While Max and her flock try to find the missing Angel, Fang finds a clue online about where she is, so he returns to Max to help search. Max and Fang’s reunion and reconnection angers Dylan, and the anger is only stoked when Jeb comes to kill Fang to carry on his mutation research, leaving Dylan to turn his violence toward Fang after fighting off their mutated hunters. When Max pleads for Dylan to spare Fang’s life, he does, but then he immediately abandons the flock. Shortly after that, Martinez arrives claiming she was manipulated by Jeb and she warns the flock that they need to come with her to escape a soon-coming disaster. Martinez takes them to an island populated by other mutant kids where she says that the island’s caves will provide a safe place to hide out from a humanity-killing disease that has been released, but Dylan’s reappearance sets off a series of confusing discoveries for Max.
This eighth Maximum Ride book was originally designed to be the final book in the series before Patterson wrote a few additional series-ending books. Bringing the story to a close, at the time it was published, this book is filled with action, suspense, and mystery that also functions with the following books. Nevermore is a fast-paced story that will captivate readers from start to finish.
