“Are you sure you’re all packed?”

From Raina Telgemeier’s Sisters.

Before Amara was born, Raina looked forward to having a sister with such joyous excitement, but once she realized that she and Amara were total opposites, the girls fell into constant bickering.  Throughout the years, Raina and Amara grow more different as their likes, personalities, and friendships continue to be more and more at odds.  However, as family reunion draws closer, the entire family is preparing for the family road trip that will get them to their destination, but will also test their patience.  Raina, Amara, and their younger brother, Will, are not looking forward to sharing tight quarters for the long trip, but when they notice an awkward coldness between their parents, the two sisters agree to work on their turbulent relationship in an attempt to help their parents.  As the road trip progresses, Raina and Amara are surprised to find that even though they are uniquely different people, the bond they share as sisters and the willingness to experience life together can make all the difference.

This story uses a variety of elements to create a fast-moving, but engaging biographical adventure.  Telgemeier’s illustrations are crisp and fun, making the wide variety of characters captivating for the reader.  The two main characters’ feelings and struggles are genuine and will connect with readers on a variety of levels.  Readers of all ages will find Sisters impossible to put down.
