“The next morning I got ready for school…”

From Maria Scrivan’s Nat Enough.

For almost as long as she can remember Nat’s life has always included her lifelong best friend, Lily, and that is just how Nat likes it. However, after not seeing much of Lily over the summer because Lily’s family move to a different part of town, Natalie is surprised to find that Lily totally ignores her on the first day of school. Nat is also shocked to find that Lily seems to have replaced her for the most popular girl in school, Alex. On the first day of middle school, Nat finds herself left alone to navigate the craziness that is a new school year. Despite her best efforts to win back Lily’s friendship, Nat is heartbroken to find her former best friend responding with meaner and meaner responses. The only two friends that Nat is able to meet are Zoe and Flo, and the two girls encourage her to be herself without worrying about Lily. While a cute boy named Derek provides some distraction for Nat, a writing competition offers her the chance to express herself in ways she never thought possible.

This graphic novel perfectly embodies that highs and lows of childhood friendships and growing up.  Scrivan’s story is funny and sweet, while her artwork is bright and engaging to create a captivating book.  Filled with a diverse cast of characters, Nat Enough is a quick read that packs the pages with a relatable, enjoyable story for both young and old graphic novels fans.
