“Lucy and Andy live in a cave with their mom and dad and little brother, Danny.”

From Jeffrey Brown’s Lucy & Andy Neanderthal: Bad to the Bones.

Life is always interesting for young neaderthals Lucy and Andy, but they would never trade the craziness for anything boring. Since they were able to find their new friends a cave of their own, Andy has been happier… though he and Richard still seem to find countless reasons to get into arguments. When Lucy and Sasha decide to create a club, all the kids from both neighboring caves are eager to join, especially when the group discovers a giant skeleton from an unknown animal. Andy’s frequent clumsiness and the arrival of three mysterious strangers cause some stress for the club, but Lucy doesn’t let those things take away all the fun. When a near-death experience causes Andy and Richard to set aside their differences, the boys find themselves responsible for a lost meal for the strangers. However, when their parents are off on a hunt, the kids quickly realize that the strangers have dark plans in mind while all the parents are busy and they’re the only ones able to stop them.

This graphic novel is full of quick chapters that easily create a full world for the fun characters to explore. While the scientific interjections offer interesting information, they do throw off the pacing of the story a bit. The illustration style is not refined and the story isn’t overly complex, but young readers will find Lucy & Andy Neanderthal: Bad to the Bones to be a laugh-filled read that’s impossible to put down.
