“Greetings, initiate!”

From Rick Riordan’s Brooklyn House Magician’s Manual.

Compiled by Carter Kane and some of the other residents of Brooklyn House, the training ground for magicians with ancient Egyptian pharaohs for ancestors, this guide seeks to answer the new magician’s common questions. Siblings Carter and Sadie give an overview on the rooms that make up Brooklyn House, the various gods that govern the realms, and the dangers that fill those realms. New arrivals will learn what to expect during their initiation process, how some magicians become hosts to the gods, and how the various gods became the stuff of legends. Along with an overview of the major Egyptian gods, magicians will enjoy tidbits from all areas of the life at Brooklyn House and Egyptian deity daily life. However, notes from the dangerous Setne hidden throughout the pages of the book show that he has begun to put evil plans into motion that could threaten the Kane siblings and all their friends. Packed with information that is vital to the new life of every young magician, this guide is a must read for anyone checking into Brooklyn House for their magical training.

The book is an incredibly quick read that will connect with fans of the Kane Chronicles trilogy. While most of Riordan’s companion books are just short stories featuring the characters from the series, this one is part informational guide, part quizzes about Egyptian mythology, and part new—and very short—collected adventures. Brooklyn House Magician’s Manual is a different collection of mythological stories, but it does offer an interesting read.
