From Edgar Camacho’s Onion Skin.
Tired of being stuck in a job that he hated for years, Rolando angrily punched a wall, which left him with a broken arm and no job. Since losing his job, Rolando has been hiding out in his room, wallowing in depressed self-pity, but his friends are finally able to convince him to go out for a night on the town. While debating where to go, Rolando notices, Nera, a woman hanging a poster for a concert across town and he is fascinated by the woman’s untamed spirit and he abandons dinner with his friends to go to the concert. Nera is a free spirited drifter that lives in a rundown food truck and though she isn’t looking for any kind of relationship with Rolando, the two quickly hit it off and decide to fix up Nera’s home into a functioning mobile food business. Nera’s secret, special blend of spices makes for amazing flavors in their food, and the pair does well as they start out with their business. However, a run-in with a biker gang on the way to a food truck competition not only places Rolando and Nera’s relationship in danger, but threatens everything they’ve built together until they can recapture Nera’s kidnapped plants.
This graphic novel faces challenges throughout the book which overwhelms the story as a whole. The cause of the various conflicts are never fully explained, which leads to the story feeling disjointed. While the illustration style is very unique, the body of Onion Skin will leave many readers feeling dissatisfied with the story.
