“Our pact had two simple rules.”

From Ryan Andrews’ This Was Our Pact.

On the night of the Equinox Festival when the town releases the traditional lanterns on the river, Ben and his friends make a pact to follow the lanterns on the river to wherever find out wherever they end up. Following the floating lanterns on their bikes, Ben and his friends are surprised to discover that they are being followed by the nerdy Nathaniel. Despite the mean comments Ben’s friends make, Nathaniel continues to bike after them. As the night carries on, Ben’s friends give up their adventure one by one and turn back for home until only Ben and Nathanial are left. Even though the boys are not friends, Ben doesn’t tell Nathaniel to go home and the two soon face an adventure beyond their wildest dreams. The night takes a turn for the fantastical when the boys meet a talking Fisherbear looking for his ancestor’s fishing spot, and while Ben is reluctant to trust the bear, Nathaniel belief in the fantastical bear soon forces them to search for a star to complete an important spell. While the boys expected a memorable night, the adventure they find an unbelievable series of events that will change their lives forever.

Andrews’ extremely long graphic novel might be a hindrance for reluctant readers, but the many wordless panels make this story manageable for readers of all ages. The illustrations are attractive and unique, blending well with this fantasy story. This Was Our Pact is an engaging read that impressively highlights the true meaning of friendship.
