“I love this song.”

From Nidhi Chanani’s Jukebox.

Shahi’s dad loves music and all things vinyl, and even though she loves her dad, Shahi gets bored because old music is all that he ever talks about. When Shahi’s dad is late getting home one day, Shahi doesn’t think anything about at first since he often loses track of time in his search for amazing vinyl records. Though as it gets later and later, Shahi grows more nervous and asks her older cousin Naz for help searching for her dad. The two cousins head to a record store that her dad often visits and they find the store abandoned, so they look for the owner to ask him about Shahi’s dad. In the attic of the store, Shahi and Naz find an old jukebox that they can tell has recently been played. When they plug in the jukebox to see what album was being played, both girls are magically sucked into the jukebox and deposited into the past when the album was originally recorded. After the album finishes playing, the girls are brought back to the attic and they realize that Shahi’s dad must be trapped back in time, so they begin searching through important records in history to find him before it’s too late.

This graphic novel is built on an interesting idea and displays the genuine connection between music and important moments in history. The illustrations are engaging, but the theme of the importance of family is the book’s true driving force. Jukebox is a quick read that will satisfy any reader searching for a music-focused fantasy adventure.
