“She spoke to him before the world fell apart.”

From James Dashner’s The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.

When Thomas, Teresa, Newt, Minho, and their friends escape from the maze, they are relieved to be free from WICKED, the evil corporation that put them there in order to study their immunity to the Flare virus.  Upon their arrival at a safe house, Thomas and his friends are introduced to other teens that’ve been rescued from other mazes.  While initially excited for their freedom, Thomas is unsure of their real safety and when a he meets Aris, the only boy in a maze of girls, the two soon discover the terrible truth that WICKED’s Dr. Paige and Janson have done to their lives.  Desperate to escape the danger, Thomas and his friends escape out into the world-turned-desert Scorch to try to find a mysterious anti-WICKED group.  As they travel across the Scorch, they quickly discover that those infected with the Flare virus (nicknamed Cranks) are a deadly force to be reckoned with.  After stumbling into a group of mercenaries and their eccentric leaders Jorge and Brenda, Thomas and his friends quickly become a very valuable prize.  Looking for a better life, Jorge and Brenda agree to take Thomas and the others to safety.  Struggling to keep his friends alive and figure out who he can trust, Thomas must face his most dangerous trial yet.

The book picks up exactly where The Maze Runner left off and takes the reader on a non-stop adventure.  One factor that could either be a turn-on/off for readers is the rise in violence; where the other books may lag before shocking you back into full attention, The Scorch Trials keeps the action, death, and gore coming at a fairly steady pace.  It is a fascinating book, that makes the movie fail in comparison and definitely deserves a read.

  1. You make the book seem so exciting. I have a special place in my heart for books that are part of a series. I especially enjoy reading books like this one after the other to keep the excitement going. My only problem…when the series is over I am usually left pretty disappointed because I want more! After the semester is over I just might start this series. Thanks for the review!

    1. I know exactly what you mean. I usually wait until the entire (or at least most of) series has been published before I pick up the first novel. Actually, whenever I hear that a movie is going to be made out of a certain series, I have found that’s a great time to start reading. And the wonderful thing about the Maze Runner series is that there is are two prequels (one hasn’t been published yet) that fit perfectly after reading the trilogy.
