“I’m sitting in front of an extra large pepperoni pizza.”

From Lauren Morrill’s It’s Kind of a Cheesy Love Story.

After being born in the bathroom of the Hot ‘N Crusty pizza joint, Beck was sentenced to a life of small town celebrity in all the wrong ways.  While her parents appreciate the free-pizza-for-life offer from Del, the pizzeria owner, they are most excited that he has promised to give Beck a job when she turns sixteen.  Unable to a better paying fast food job, Beck reluctantly agrees and takes the job, joining the ranks of the sauce-covered staff.  Before her job, Beck spent her time with best friend, Natalie, or her secret crush, Mac, but her Hot ‘N Crusty schedule quickly leaves little time for her friends.  Her coworkers are fun and more normal than Beck expected, with the exception of the delivery guy, Tristan, who seems instantly repulsed by Beck’s presence.  However, when Tristan kisses Beck to save her from an awkward situation with Mac, it throws her off course as she tries to figure out what kind of people she wants to surround herself with.  While Beck struggles to figure out everything in her life, she finds herself torn between Natalie and her friends, Tristan and her new coworker friends, and figuring out who “Hot ‘N Crusty Bathroom Baby” really is when no one else is around.

This book moves quickly, but never leaves the reader feeling rushed or robbed of a good story.  Morrill crafts in Beck that is honest and relatable, easily drawing the reader in.  It’s Kind of a Cheesy Love Story is sweet, funny, and heartfelt story that will resonate with teen readers looking for a no-pressure book to read.
